Everything you need to know

Your questions,
answered.

No fluff. Real answers to the questions Calgary homeowners ask before booking an install.

Getting Started

Permanent outdoor lighting is a professionally installed LED system that stays on your roofline year-round — no ladders, no seasonal setup, no storage. Unlike traditional Christmas lights that go up in November and come down in January, permanent lights are mounted once inside a slim aluminium channel along your fascia board. You control everything from your phone: 16 million colours, animated effects, schedules, and holiday themes. Use warm white for everyday curb appeal, red-and-green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, blue-and-gold for Stampede — or any colour you want, any time. The system runs on safe 24V DC power, is rated IP68 (fully waterproof), tested to −40°C, and lasts 50,000+ hours. It's the last lighting system your home will ever need.

Cost & Pricing

Pricing depends on your roofline length, home complexity, and feature set. Every Starise install includes lights, controller, app, and labour — with zero hidden fees or subscriptions. We provide free detailed quotes — most come back within 24 hours. Request yours here → For a full cost breakdown, see our blog post: How much do permanent Christmas lights cost in Calgary? You can also read Are permanent lights worth it? for an honest look at the value.

No. You pay once — hardware plus installation. There are no ongoing subscription fees, no app licences, and no annual renewal charges. The system is yours outright.

No travel fees for any of our regular service areas — Calgary, Airdrie, Cochrane, Okotoks, Chestermere, or Strathmore. We also travel to Edmonton regularly. If you're outside these cities, contact us and we'll let you know.

We do offer financing options for qualified customers. Mention it in your quote request or bring it up when we follow up — we can walk you through the details.

The Hardware

We install individual RGBWW LED puck nodes spaced 8 inches apart inside a low-profile aluminium extrusion channel. The channel mounts flush along your roofline fascia board. Wiring runs discretely to a controller box that plugs into your home's exterior power. The result looks clean and architectural — nothing like temporary string lights.

Our system runs on 24V DC, which delivers better brightness, more consistent colour across long runs, and lower heat generation than 12V alternatives. At 24V, you get more efficient power delivery and less voltage drop — meaning the LEDs at the far end of a 150-foot run are just as bright as the ones near the power supply.

Our RGBWW nodes support 16 million colours plus warm white and cool white. You can display a single solid colour, multi-colour gradients, animated effects (chase, twinkle, breathe, wave, etc.), or holiday palettes — red-and-green for Christmas, orange for Halloween, red-and-white for Canada Day, blue-and-gold for Stampede, and so on.

Our LED puck nodes are rated for 50,000+ hours. Running them 8 hours per day every single day, that's over 17 years. In practice, most homeowners run them seasonally, so the hardware will likely outlast your ownership of the home.

Installation

Most residential installs are completed in a single day — typically 4–8 hours depending on roofline complexity and total footage. We arrive with everything needed, mount the system, run the wiring, connect the controller, and walk you through the app before we leave.

We can install on any combination of: front roofline, both sides, the back, or a full wrap of the entire home. We also do garages, covered porches, decks, and secondary rooflines. Most clients start with the front (and sometimes one or both sides) — a full wrap gives the most dramatic look.

No. The aluminium channel is surface-mounted to the fascia board — not the shingles. It's designed to be permanent but removable without damage if you ever want it taken off. Most homeowners never do.

Our systems connect to a standard exterior GFCI outlet. If your home already has one, no electrician is required. If you need one added, we can arrange that separately. Most Calgary homes already have the necessary outlet.

Yes — the system is modular and expandable. If you start with the front and want to add sides or a garage later, we can extend the run at any time. The controller supports multiple zones.

Winter Performance

Yes — this is exactly what the hardware is built for. Our puck nodes are rated IP68 (fully waterproof and dust-proof) and tested to −40°C. They handle Chinook freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and ice without any problems. The lights stay up year-round — no seasonal removal required. See our Calgary permanent lighting page for more on how the system handles Calgary's Chinook weather, or our Edmonton page for Edmonton winter performance details.

IP68 is the highest standard ingress protection rating. IP6X = fully dustproof. IPX8 = withstands continuous submersion in water. Together, IP68 means the unit is sealed completely against both dust and water — designed for outdoor permanent use in any climate.

No — that's the whole point. Permanent lighting stays up year-round. No ladders in November, no storage, no taking down in January. Just change the colour from your phone whenever you want.

Controlling the Lights

You control everything from your smartphone. The app lets you choose from hundreds of pre-built effects, schedule lights to turn on and off automatically (e.g., sunset to midnight), sync to music, set holiday timers, or pick any static colour. You can also use physical buttons on the controller if you prefer.

Yes. You can set the lights to turn on at sunset automatically (the app uses your location to calculate this), and turn off at any scheduled time — midnight, 11pm, whenever you prefer. You can also set different schedules for different days of the week or upcoming holidays.

At full brightness, yes — they're visible in daylight. But they're most impactful at dusk and evening. Most homeowners use the scheduling feature so lights come on automatically at sunset.

Trades & Construction

Yes. Our team comes from a trades background with hands-on construction experience. We understand building envelopes, roofline framing, soffit and fascia construction, attic wiring paths, and proper mounting techniques that protect your home's structure. Unlike lighting-only companies, our trades experience ensures installations are done properly — correct fastening into the right substrates, clean wiring routes, and zero risk of water intrusion or structural damage.

No. Our trades background means we know exactly how to mount the extrusion channel without penetrating the roof membrane or voiding warranties. The channel is mounted under the shingle drip edge or along the fascia — never through the roofing material itself. We know building code and construction standards inside and out.

Yes. We frequently work with new builds and renovations. With our trades background, we can coordinate with builders and contractors to install permanent lighting during construction — running wiring before drywall is closed, pre-mounting channels during siding or soffit installation, and positioning controllers optimally. This can result in an even cleaner install with fully concealed wiring.

Yes. We've installed on every exterior finish common in Alberta — stucco, vinyl siding, Hardie board, wood, stone, brick, and composite materials. Our trades background means we know the correct fasteners, drill bits, and techniques for each material type to ensure a secure, damage-free mount.

Ownership & Support

No. Because the system operates at 24V (Safety Extra-Low Voltage) and is ETL/UL certified, it does not affect home insurance premiums. The low-voltage design means there is no fire risk. Our installation with trades-quality workmanship ensures all wiring is done safely and to code.

The lights require household power, so they will turn off during a power outage. However, they automatically resume their last setting when power is restored — no need to reconfigure anything.

The permanent lighting system stays with the home and is a selling point for buyers. Real estate professionals report that permanent lighting enhances curb appeal and can positively influence sale price. The new homeowner simply downloads the app to take control. No. Starise Lighting is a locally owned and operated Alberta company — not a franchise, not a dealership, not a reseller. This means direct accountability, consistent quality, and local support from the same team that installs your lights.

Yes, though virtually no homeowner requests removal. The system can be uninstalled and the mounting points patched. Across 1,392+ installations, removal requests are essentially non-existent — customers consistently report loving their lights more than expected.

DIY kits sold online are consumer-grade products (typically IP65 or lower) with adhesive mounting that fails in Alberta's freeze-thaw climate. They lack proper extrusion channels, use thinner wiring, and come with basic controllers. Our professional system uses commercial-grade IP68 components, custom aluminium channel, and professional installation by a trained crew with a trades background. The result lasts 15+ years vs. 1–3 years for most DIY kits. Read our full comparison: Professional install vs. DIY permanent lighting. You can also see how we compare to specific brands like Gemstone Lights and Govee.

Yes. The app supports music sync mode where the lights react to audio in real time — perfect for house parties, Halloween, Christmas displays, and game day celebrations.

No. The 24V LED system and controller operate completely silently. There is no humming, buzzing, or clicking.

The controller is installed outside, but we take care to place it in the least visible spot possible — tucked behind downspouts, under eaves, or in a low-traffic area. Wiring is routed under soffits, through attic spaces, or along concealed paths. From the street, only the slim aluminium channel is visible along the roofline — and when the lights are off, even that is barely noticeable.
