It's a series of individual LED modules — puck nodes, seated every 8 inches inside an aluminium channel along your roofline — driven by a controller and a power supply. When something goes wrong, many issues can be serviced at the component level rather than by replacing the installation. And under our five-year product warranty, hardware that fails in normal use is replaced at no charge.
That's the practical answer. The more useful thing to understand is what can actually go wrong — because a dark light doesn't automatically mean the LED itself died, and the real cause determines what the fix looks like.

A permanent lighting system has a small number of distinct parts, and any of them can be the reason a light isn't behaving:
- The LED module itself. The rarest case. Our nodes are rated for 100,000+ hours of operation and sealed to IP68, so a genuinely dead module is the exception, not the rule.
- A connection. Where wiring meets a run of lights, or where two sections join. A poor or weathered connection can make a light — or a whole section — behave badly while every LED in it is perfectly fine.
- Wiring. Physical damage from renovation work, rodents, or impact can interrupt power or data along a run.
- The controller. The brain of the system. If a controller output has a problem, the symptom shows up in the lights it drives — even though the lights themselves are healthy.
- The power supply. If power delivery is the issue, you'll typically see it across a whole zone rather than in one node.
This is why the honest answer to "my light is out — is the puck dead?" is: maybe, but don't assume it. A dark light is a symptom. Diagnosis tells you the cause.
Does one failed light mean replacing everything?
No. This is one of the biggest practical differences between a professionally installed permanent system and a consumer light string. On a cheap string, one failure often means binning the string. On a modular permanent system, each lighting module is an individual component seated in the channel — the system is built to be serviced.
It's also worth saying plainly: with Starise, a hardware failure in normal use within the first five years isn't a repair bill. How technicians diagnose a failed light
You don't need to troubleshoot anything yourself, but here's what the process looks like at a homeowner level:
- Identify the location. Which node, which section, which zone. The pattern of the symptom — one light versus a stretch of lights — already narrows the cause.
- Inspect the connection points. Connections near the affected area are checked first, because they're the most common culprit on any outdoor electrical system.
- Isolate module, data, or power. The technician determines whether the issue lives in the module itself, in the signal reaching it, or in the power feeding it.
- Replace the affected component. Module, connection, or wiring section — whichever the diagnosis points to.
- Test the full system. Colours, effects, zones, and app control are verified before the job is closed out.
What homeowners should look for
Different symptoms point to different causes. Here's a rough guide to what you might notice:
- One dark light — the most contained symptom. Often points at a single module or its immediate connection.
- A section behaving differently — a stretch that's dimmer, the wrong colour, or out entirely usually points upstream: a connection, wiring, or a controller output rather than the LEDs themselves.
- Flickering — frequently a connection or power-delivery symptom rather than a dying LED.
- Colour mismatch — one node rendering colours differently from its neighbours can indicate a module issue or a data problem.
- An entire run offline — usually points at power, the controller, or a main connection rather than any individual light.
None of these require you to do anything on a ladder. Note what you see and when it started — that description alone speeds up diagnosis.
Why installation quality matters more than people think
Most "failed light" service calls across the industry aren't really about LEDs. They're about everything around the LEDs: connections that weren't weather-sealed properly, wiring that was left exposed, power and data runs that were planned too casually for the length of the roofline.
This is where the boring details of an install earn their money:
- Sealed, weather-rated hardware. Starise puck nodes are rated IP68 — fully submersible — and the lighting hardware is certified to ETL, UL, cUL, CE, FCC, and RoHS standards. Sealing at the component level means moisture has to work a lot harder to cause problems.
- Protected wiring in a real channel. Our lights sit recessed in a custom aluminium channel rather than being surface-stuck to the fascia. The channel shields modules and wiring from UV, ice, and physical wear.
- Proper power and data planning. Runs sized correctly for the home, on a 24V system that holds consistent output across long eaves.
- Clean connections. Fewer, better-made connection points mean fewer future failure points.
A system built this way fails rarely — and when something does happen, it fails in a way that's easy to isolate and fix.
Can the individual light be replaced?
Yes. The system is modular by design: lighting modules are individual components, and many issues can be serviced at the component level without replacing the entire lighting system. The exact repair depends on whether the fault is in a light module, a connection, wiring, the power supply or another component — which is exactly what diagnosis establishes before anything is replaced. You're never in a situation where one dark light automatically turns into a quote for a new installation.
And because the hardware is specified for Alberta conditions in the first place, service calls are the exception. Most Starise systems simply run, season after season, with nothing needed from you but the app.
