Canada Day in Calgary is something special. The long July 1st evening light, backyard celebrations, and a city-wide mood of genuine pride make it one of the best days to live in this city. And since 2023, an increasing number of Calgary homeowners have been adding one more element to the celebration: their Starise roofline lights, switched to red and white.

The effect is immediately striking. A full roofline of alternating red and white LEDs, visible from down the street, tells every neighbour exactly what day it is and how you feel about it. Here are the best setups our customers use for July 1st — and all summer long.

Quick Setup The Starise app has a built-in "Canada Day" preset under Themes. One tap sets your entire roofline to a red-and-white alternate pattern. You can then customize the speed, brightness, and animation style from there.

The 5 best Canada Day setups

1. Classic Red & White Alternate — The Crowd Favourite

Canada Red #CC0022 White #FFFFFF

Clean segments of Canadian red and pure white, alternating across the roofline. Static — no animation. This is the most popular Canada Day setup because it looks like a massive Canadian flag stretched across your roofline. Best at 90–100% brightness so it's visible in the early evening light.

App: Alternate → Red (#CC0022) / White → Static → Brightness: 95%

2. Patriotic Chase — Movement and Energy

The same red and white alternating, but with a slow chase animation — segments flowing left to right across the roofline in a continuous loop. Set at 40–50% speed for a dignified, flowing effect rather than a chaotic strobe. This is the best pick for a backyard party where people will actually be watching the lights.

App: Chase → Red / White → Speed: 45%

3. Red Pulse with White Twinkle — Atmospheric and Unique

A deep red base that pulses slowly while bright white sparkles fire at random intervals across the full roofline. Less "flag," more "northern summer night" — it reads patriotic without being literal. Popular with homeowners who want something distinctive that still communicates the theme.

App: Pulse → Deep Red base → add Twinkle layer → White sparkles → Density: Medium

4. All White — Clean and Elegant

Sometimes the most elegant choice for Canada Day is pure, bright white — echoing the white in the flag and providing clean, beautiful illumination for your outdoor gathering without the colour commitment. Pairs beautifully with red physical decorations (flags, tablecloths, balloons) that provide the colour contrast.

App: Static → White (#FFFFFF) → Brightness: 100%

5. Firework Burst — For the Night of

Bright multi-colour bursts firing from random points on the roofline, expanding outward and fading — mimicking fireworks. Use this specifically during the fireworks window on July 1st evening when your neighborhood is alive with celebrations. Dramatic and festive in a way that earns genuine reactions.

App: Firework → Red / White / Gold → Rate: High → Duration: 2–3 hours max

Going beyond Canada Day: the whole summer

July 1st is the peak, but permanent lighting gives you the whole summer to play with colour. Here's how Starise customers use their lights through July and August:

How neighbours react

We've heard from dozens of Calgary customers who've said Canada Day was the moment they realized how much their roofline lighting changed how their neighbourhood feels. Kids stop on bikes. Families slow down. People wave and give thumbs up from their cars. One customer in Tuscany told us three neighbours asked who their installer was just because of the Canada Day setup.

The visibility factor is real — a full roofline of red and white is something you can see from 100 metres away on a clear summer evening. It's community pride made visible.

Frequently asked questions

Can I schedule Canada Day lights to turn on automatically?
Yes. Set up a scene called "Canada Day" with your preferred red-and-white setup, then use the scheduling feature to turn it on automatically at sunset on July 1st (or for the whole long weekend). See our app features guide for scheduling instructions.
What's the exact red colour for the Canadian flag?
The official colour is called "Flag Red" — Pantone 032 C, which translates to approximately #FF0022 in hex. In the Starise app, enter #CC0022 for a slightly deeper, richer red that looks more authentic on LEDs than the pure flag red (which can look slightly orange on bright LEDs).
Will the lights be bright enough to see during the long July daylight hours?
In full daylight (noon to 5pm), LEDs are less visible — the same limitation as any outdoor lighting. From about 8:30pm onwards on July 1st, as Calgary's long summer evening light fades, the effect becomes increasingly dramatic. Plan your "main show" for 9pm–midnight when the contrast is highest.
